BIG COTTONWOOD CANYON, Utah, July 2, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — The Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office has identified the hiker who died after a fall from the Sundial Trail in Little Cottonwood Canyon.

The man was Mohammad Abdullah, 80, an experienced hiker, the office’s news release says.

Abdullah left for his hike, alone, at about 6 a.m. Sunday, June 30. His wife reported him overdue at about 10 p.m. the same day, the statement says.

The search began immediately. A Department of Public Safety helicopter located Abdullah’s body at about 9:30 a.m. Monday, and his body was recovered two hours later with help from the Salt Lake County’s Sheriff’s Search and Rescue.

“This is a heartbreaking tragedy,” SLCo Sheriff Rosie Rivera says. “Our hearts go out to Mr. Abdullah’s family during this difficult time.”

The Salt Lake County Sheriff’s SAR crew urges outdoor enthusiasts to be prepared and cautious, especially in hazardous areas, the statement says.
