LAYTON, Utah, Aug. 14, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — Family members of Andre Leon Debose, who died in Willard Bay Saturday while trying to save his teen son, are remembering his life and sacrifice on a fundraising page to raise money for the children he left behind.

The GoFundMe page says Florida native Debose, 38, was the single father of five, ages 1, 3, 13, 16 and 17.

“He selflessly jumped into the water to rescue his 17-year-old son and a 19-year-old woman who were struggling with the rough conditions,” the GoFundMe page says.

“Andre’s son saw his friend having a hard time swimming and immediately went to her aid,” the page says. “Though the young woman was able to make it back to the boat, Andre’s son then found himself in distress. Without hesitation, Andre jumped in to save his beloved child.

“Tragically, Andre and his son were only able to hold onto a single life jacket between them. As his son made it back to safety, Andre disappeared beneath the waves and did not resurface. This devastating loss has left Andre’s five children facing an unimaginable future without their devoted father.”

The page asks for donations “for a protected trust fund to provide for Andre’s children and ensure their future is secure. Any contributions, no matter how small, would be deeply appreciated as they navigate this heartbreaking tragedy.

“Andre’s selfless act of love and courage will not be forgotten. He died as he lived – putting the needs of his family above his own. Though his children now face life without their beloved father, they can take solace in knowing that he gave his life to save them. Andre’s memory will forever be a blessing.”

Gephardt Daily cannot ensure donated funds will be used as stated, but GoFundMe has a guarantee listed on the page. Check the web page for more information.
