MIDVALE, Utah, Oct. 28, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — Unified Fire officials officials say they have their suspect in custody after an overnight arson incident that closed Midvalley Elementary for the day.
“Around 2:40 a.m., UFA fire investigators were requested by UPD to respond to Midvalley Elementary School for a fire that was intentionally set on a large utility box,” says a statement issued Monday by the Unified Fire Authority.
During the “initial investigation, we did see video of an older male with a gray beard, driving a newer model Hyundai with possibly out of state plate setting the fire.”
The department shared blurry photos of the alleged suspect and his car.
At 3:46 p.m., Unified Fire posted an update.
“In a coordinated effort with UPD, Unified Fire Authority Arson Investigators were able to track down and arrest the suspect on charges of arson.”
The name of the man arrested has not yet been released. Gephardt Daily will have more information as it becomes available.
Because of lingering electrical problems and a lack of heat, Midvalley Elementary students were told to engage in remote learning Monday, with a plan to return to the building on Tuesday. Bag lunches were provided for pickup at another location.
