Utah, June 28, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — Two fast-moving wildfires in Utah have burned a total of more than 7,000 acres as of Thursday evening and are both zero percent contained, officials said.
The Rough Canyon Fire, located between Plymouth and Portage in Box Elder County near the Idaho border, has burned an estimated 3,144 acres, according to tweets from Utah Fire Info.
“Structure protection for the town of Portage and three nearby cabins has been implemented,” a tweet Thursday morning said.
The wildfire is human caused, officials added, but they have not specifically said how it started.
The blaze was discovered Wednesday afternoon, and air resources, state, county, and federal resources responding.
Another large wildfire, the Black Mountain Fire, broke out Thursday afternoon just before 12:50 p.m. near Highway 130, just south of Minersville, Utah Fire Info tweeted. Highway 130 is closed in the area, officials added.
The fire is estimated at 4,000 acres and growing, but the Minersville is not under direct threat as officials said the fire is moving east of the town. The fire is also human caused and zero percent contained.
“Firefighters are making good progress on the west perimeter of Highway 130,” officials tweeted. “Aerial resources are being utilized and additional crews have been ordered. Red flag warning remains in effect until 10 p.m. Friday for erratic winds and low relative humidity.”
